Balu Mahendra passes away

Veteran filmmaker Balu Mahendra died on Thursday morning, after being admitted to a private hospital in Chennai following a heart attack.

The 74-year-old filmmaker was admitted to a hospital after he complained of chest pain. His personal assistant confirmed the news over phone that Balu Mahendra had passed away just past 11 a.m.

The veteran director was among the a pioneer in Indian cinema and is also a screenwriter, editor and cinematographer. Balu Mahendra has won five National Film Awards—two for cinematography, three Filmfare Awards South and numerous state awards from the governments of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The ace director, started his career as a cinematographer with 'Nellu' in 1974 and soon made his directional debut in a few years through Kokila, a Kannada film.
